Ring Tones Adults Can't Hear

Teens are taking their ingenuity to a new level by installing a ring tone with a high-frequency buzz that most adults can't hear so they can use their phones to text-message in classrooms, according to reports in England.

Known as "Teen Buzz," it is spread from phone to phone via text message and Bluetooth technology, the Daily Mail said.

The sound was being used in a device called the Mosquito, which was marketed to help store owners in England repel teenagers from loitering outside their shops.

The high-pitch sound is irritating for teenagers but most adults can't hear it because over the age of 20, most adults are unable to hear that frequency (between 18 to 20 kHz), according to Mosquito manufacturer Compound Security. It is based on the medical phenomenon known as presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss, Compound Security said.

The trend of personalizing one's mobile phone with music has proved quite lucrative for the world's record labels.

Ring tones, once dismissed as nothing more than a passing fad, have become a $3 billion worldwide market. But it's a market that is nearing maturation, with growth rates expected to fall to about 20 percent this year after doubling in 2005.

Within a matter of weeks, several wireless operators are expected to introduce musical "alert tones"--a snippet of a song lasting between two and five seconds, that users can assign to play when they receive incoming text messages and voice mail, similar to a ring tone.

As a result, labels are now preparing different types of music clips they hope consumers will buy to personalize other mobile phone features.

Several cellphone firms and portals are offering a wide range of soccer-related ring tones-so many of them that one could change the ringtone everyday and maybe switch from one match to another.

However, in most cases, a subscriber would need a relatively high-end phone with GPRS or WAP-enabled features. With a ringtone download priced at Rs 15 on an average, mobile companies are eyeing a neat sum from the soccer fever.

Take for instance the offers from service providers like Bharti Airtel and Tata Indicom. Their subscribers can download FIFA World Cup's official song by the hot-selling group `II Divo'—`Time of Our Lives'. Remember the rush for the official song of the World Cup 2002—`Boom' by Anastacia; and `La Copa de la Vida' by Ricky Martin in 1998?

Virgin Mobile USA and Warner Music Group is set to sell exclusive Boyz N Da Hood ringtones and wallpapers on Virgin Mobile phones through its "First Dibs" program.

The deal also allows Virgin Mobile customers to help Hurricane Katrina victims by purchasing the Boyz N Da Hood logo wallpaper. Net proceeds will be donated to the Children's Health Fund to benefit hurricane relief.

"We're thrilled to be partnering with Warner Music Group on this 'First Dibs' offer," said Jeff Toig, director of mobile content for Virgin Mobile USA, via a statement. "Rap is consistently at the top of the download list for our customers, so we know the Boyz N Da Hood offer will be right up their alley."

The mobile entertainment market, mostly for cell phone ringtones, is estimated at about $300 million annually in the United States, said Geoff Mayfield, director of charts at Billboard, who cited the number from mobile market research firm Consect.

The global market is worth about $3.1 billion, he added.

Mayfield said the industry could potentially generate plenty of revenue for music labels as more customers adapt to downloading popular music to their cell phones.

The "Hot Ringtones" chart will be compiled on a weekly basis, and Billboard's Mayfield told CNN/Money that Alicia Keys and Usher's 'My Boo' has scored the first No. 1 spot on the new chart this week.

Porn star Jenna Jameson is now hawking her "moan tones."

For $2.50 fans of the ubiquitous porno queen can choose from a variety of moans, grunts and lurid sexual noises all recorded by the blond bombshell.

If that's not enough, Jameson will talk dirty to you when you phones rings, in English or Spanish.

Jameson, who recently wrote a best-selling memoir, has launched the venture with Wicked Wireless, a mobile music and entertainment company.

Also available are color pictures of the porn star posing naked that can be displayed on your phone for $2.99.

"Rock stars make music tones, porn stars make moan tones," said Dennis Adamo, head of Wicked Wireless. "We thought it would be an interesting novel approach of introducing new content to the mobile users."

Jameson's charms are already being downloaded in Argentina, Ecuador, Venezuela, and in a couple of weeks will be available from Mexico to Uruguay.

Latin American users can download a moan or a picture for $1.00 each, while U.S. customers will pay $2.50 for a moan and $2.99 for a wallpaper once the service is launched.

Some people were shocked, but others said they wanted more from the product.

"If you can get her to say my name then I would buy it. I need that kind of personal attention," said New Yorker Julian McCullough.

U.S. users will have to wait to get Jameson on their phones as no mobile carriers in the United States have expressed any interest in carrying the service.

Maxis Malaysia announced a new service, called Caller Ringtones, last week and said it will be for its Hotlink subscribers. The service, currently in trials, will be made available at the end of this month, reports The Star online.

"Karim Abdul Malik, Maxis general manager as well as head of product development and management, said Caller Ringtones is the industry's first “ring back” service.

Previously, he said, ringtone personalisation has only been about the mobile phone owner. “It is the handphone owner who hears it. Now you can have personalised ringtones for the people calling you.”

Different types of songs can be assigned to different caller groups. “You can have your parents crooning to oldies, your pals tapping their feet to the latest pop hit or your boss humming to elevator music as they wait,” said Chee Loo Fun, head of prepaid marketing at Maxis.

“You can also set a specific song for a specific caller on a specific day. Or (you can) surprise a loved one with a sexy birthday greeting. There’s even a jukebox feature that plays all the caller ringtones on your playlist randomly.”

The Maxis Caller Ringtones library contains more than 400 recordings.

Digi can't further proceed with their innovative services until they obtain a 3G license. The most they could provide to their customers are services that could fully utilize their existing network infrastructure. GPRS data service would be the most popular service most people demand of. Not many operators around the world upgraded their GSM/GPRS network to support EDGE system. That's mainly due to the limited range of phone models with EDGE functions. Instead, most network operators prefer to go for 3G.

EDGE technology currently supports data transfer rates of up to 115kbps and may be expended to 461kbps only if network resources are fully utilized. EDGE is still not capable of providing video telephone calls and video conferencing. 3G data speed could achieve at least 292kbps at its initial launch. It is almost the speed of TM DSL (Streamyx) at first it was introduced to local market.

Anyway, DIGI may have some new services for video ringtones once they get the 3G licence.
