Ring Tones Adults Can't Hear

Teens are taking their ingenuity to a new level by installing a ring tone with a high-frequency buzz that most adults can't hear so they can use their phones to text-message in classrooms, according to reports in England.

Known as "Teen Buzz," it is spread from phone to phone via text message and Bluetooth technology, the Daily Mail said.

The sound was being used in a device called the Mosquito, which was marketed to help store owners in England repel teenagers from loitering outside their shops.

The high-pitch sound is irritating for teenagers but most adults can't hear it because over the age of 20, most adults are unable to hear that frequency (between 18 to 20 kHz), according to Mosquito manufacturer Compound Security. It is based on the medical phenomenon known as presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss, Compound Security said.

Ring tone spin-offs for mobile phones

The trend of personalizing one's mobile phone with music has proved quite lucrative for the world's record labels.

Ring tones, once dismissed as nothing more than a passing fad, have become a $3 billion worldwide market. But it's a market that is nearing maturation, with growth rates expected to fall to about 20 percent this year after doubling in 2005.

Within a matter of weeks, several wireless operators are expected to introduce musical "alert tones"--a snippet of a song lasting between two and five seconds, that users can assign to play when they receive incoming text messages and voice mail, similar to a ring tone.

As a result, labels are now preparing different types of music clips they hope consumers will buy to personalize other mobile phone features.

World Cup Ringtones

Mobile phone service providers are making sure that die-hard soccer fans keep their favourite Bollywood and devotional ringtones aside for a month. That is, till the FIFA World Cup 2006 lasts. Several cellphone firms and portals are offering a wide range of soccer-related ring tones-so many of them that one could change the ringtone everyday and maybe switch from one match to another.

However, in most cases, a subscriber would need a relatively high-end phone with GPRS or WAP-enabled features. With a ringtone download priced at Rs 15 on an average, mobile companies are eyeing a neat sum from the soccer fever.

Take for instance the offers from service providers like Bharti Airtel and Tata Indicom. Their subscribers can download FIFA World Cup's official song by the hot-selling group `II Divo'—`Time of Our Lives'. Remember the rush for the official song of the World Cup 2002—`Boom' by Anastacia; and `La Copa de la Vida' by Ricky Martin in 1998?

New Ringtones for Christmas

Spice up your phone tunes with this Ringtones for Christmas. Man...Telcos make a lot of money nowadays.....Can they ever go bankrupt ?

Brittany Edwards, 13, of Villanova, Pennsylvania, likes Christmas music, but only a few weeks before Christmas. And, she doesn’t like hearing it in stores or on TV commercials; she only likes it on her…cell phone.Brittany is like many teens that are as likely to enjoy listening to Christmas carols as much as they would enjoy listening to disco. That is, until her phone rings. “Most of them (Christmas carols) are just plain boring. A ringtone makes it more upbeat. No lyrics to listen to. So you get the whole tune out of it without the annoying words,” said the Connecticut seventh grade student.Seasonal ringtones are part of a big business in an industry that is ringing up profits for many companies across the United States. Independent ringtone operators are earning $600 million per year from the sale of ringtones and some industry analysts estimate that carriers are deriving ten percent of their annual revenues from data applications, the biggest of which happens to be ringtones. Billboard magazine even ranks the Top Ringtones each week. “Ringtone sales have far exceeded our expectations for this year,” said Bret Dunlap, president of Monstertones (www.monstertones.com), a ringtone company that provides the newest type of ringtones, MP3 ringtones.
